BREATHING NEW LIFE INTO AN ACTIVE VENUE
From the outset, the Gas South Arena project presented a unique challenge—the arena would remain operational throughout construction. Our team had to navigate a delicate dance, working around the facility’s event schedule and designated blackout days. Intricate pour schedules had to be meticulously planned at least a month in advance, ensuring minimal disruption to the arena’s activities.
INTEGRATING THE PAST WITH THE FUTURE
We faced several obstacles as the project progressed. One of the most significant was discovering differences between the existing structure and the provided drawings during demolition. This required us to adjust on-the-fly to ensure the new work would integrate seamlessly with the iconic building. This was particularly challenging as we had to demolish certain areas while protecting the remaining structure. We had to be precise and pay attention to the smallest details to achieve a successful outcome. Close coordination between our team and Holder Construction, the project’s general contractor, was crucial.
ARCHITECTURAL ARTISTRY IN CONCRETE
The arena’s expansion envisioned breathtaking architectural elements, including monumental cast-inplace staircases, columns, elevated slabs, and intricate trench drains. Martin Concrete’s in-house finishing team, MC Finishing, took center stage, meticulously blending their craftsmanship with the existing structure, ensuring a cohesive and visually stunning final product.
OVERCOMING NATURE’S OBSTACLES
Perhaps the most daunting challenge was the ballroom terrace, perched above an existing pond. Undeterred, our team devised an innovative solution—creating an accessway along the lakebed and staging the crane within the pond itself. With each passing rain shower, the crew diligently pumped out water, transforming the lakebed into a safe and workable construction site.

Martin Concrete’s team remained agile, adapting to drawing changes and scope modifications while upholding the highest quality and safety standards. Over 115 RFIs and change orders were submitted as the project evolved, requiring strict document control, personnel management, and continuous communication with the client and design teams.
